Room 406, evening

A week that had included library duty, a night out at Caritas, movies with a friend, exams, and plotting a rescue mission meant that Isabel was pretty damn tired when she went to bed on Friday night. Unfortunately the conversation with Rikku brought memories and Isabel didn't actually get into a deep sleep until some time just before dawn. She slept till noon when the sound of yelling and chaos in the hallways woke her.

A quick look out her door found Isabel shutting it quickly. Beyond grateful to whatever quirk of Fandom left her still eighteen, she decided an afternoon with a good book was much better then weetiny chaos.

After a quiet afternoon, Isabel finally got out her camera and opened her door.

"What's it about?" Alanna asked, trying to peer at the cover.

"Ummm," Isabel stammered, because somehow she doubted anything written by Angelica Desmesnes was good for kids. "It's a history book. It's very boring."

"History isn't boring!" Alanna exlaimed and bounced on to the bead, carefully putting Faithful down next to her. "What time?"

"Late seventeenth century I think," she said, hazarding a guess. It's not Angelica was exactly accurate.

Alanna tried to puzzle this out. "Are there knights?"

"No knights," Isabel said sadly. "Pirates and ninjas."

Alanna frowned. "Pirates are bad!"

Actually Barjossakin was very good, but not in a way Isabel was going to share with a wee Alanna. "They are. Very bad. They need to be captured and sent to jail."

Alanna nodded. "Uh huh! And then hang them because they broked the King's law."

"I suppose," she agreed. "Or they could just keep them in jail until they promise to be good."

Alanna frowned. "Pirates can't ever be good."

"You're probably right," Isabel said. "So what did you do today? Anything fun?"

"I talked to Sam 'n Jack gave me waffles!" Alanna cheerfully informed her. "And Faithful napped a lot cause he's little."

"Were they little?" she asked, reaching out to carefully scratch Faithful's ears. "Yeah, he has to do that so he can be big and strong one day."

"Like a pony?" Alanna asked as Faithful purred.

"Not that big, more cat sized," Isabel grinned.

"Oh." Alanna pouted. "Jack said that Lana had a pony sized cat."

She remembered the growling panther from Tactics. "That's a panther. He's a different kind of cat."

"Oh." Alanna considered this for a long moment. "Can I have a panther?"

"I don't think. They're rather ferocious."

Alanna pouted.

"Maybe we can get you a stuffed one?" she suggested.

Alanna grinned. "Could you?"

"I'll look for one," Isabel promised, wondering if Alanna would kill her if she gave it to her for a graduation gift.

Alanna beamed. "Thank you Isa!"
