Room 406, Late afternoon/early evening

Sunday afternoons were meant for being lazy and not accomplishing anything too important. Isabel is sprawled across her bed, because sitting? So not an option right now. Which is part of the reason she's in her room, bouncing in public is a bit embarrassing.

She's contemplating a selection of nail polish colors, trying to figure out which color she's in the mood for this week. Not that it really mattered, she could always change them easily enough, but it's still nice to sit and do something girly and perfectly normal.

"A little of both," she said. "We always knew we were different, and as we got older, we realized why. Then it was just a matter of trying to fit in. To hide in plain sight and pretend to be normal."

Pointing to one of the pictures taped to the wall over her bed Isabel said, "And it was me, my brother Max, and Michael. But Michael ran away that first night and hid, so he wasn't found when we were. We didn't know what happened to him until we started school a few months later. He's the one I told you about the other day, that wound up in foster care."

She pointed to another picture, one of Tess laughing with Kyle. "That's Tess, she was in the pods as well. But she didn't come out until later, and when she did, the shapeshifter that was supposed to be our guardian was there waiting for her. They spent ten years looking for us, and finally found us last Spring."

Parker studied the pictures, and said, "Shapeshifter? Is that a different kind of alien from the kind you are? Or are you going to be like Jake when you're grown up? And if you are, are you going to be as big a caffiene addict?" Her lips twitched, and she shook her head. "I'm glad you found Michael again, and Tess. But I think I get what you were telling me about before more, about why you'd want to get away from it for a while."

Isabel nodded. "Yeah, Nacedo is different. He's definitely more alien, in every way. As for us, we're not shapeshifters so I don't think I have to worry about the caffiene addiction. We're human, mostly, we just have a little extra alien mixed in."

She looked down, studying her nails. "You don't know the half of me getting away. Would you believe the four of us are supposed to somehow return to our planet, wherever it might be, and save our people?"

Parker blinked. "Save them from what? Is this another Chosen One thing? God, can't the universe come up with something else?"

"Apparently there's a war, and they're enslaved. We were killed and that's when they took our essence, whatever that is, and combined it with the human DNA. We were sent here to learn to use our powers in order to go back and save them." She pushed to her feet and paced again, instantly frustrated, just like she always was when she talked about it.

"It's insane and makes no sense. We don't know where we're supposed to go, how we're supposed to get there. Why did it take almost 40 years for us to come out of the pods..." She laughed bitterly, "And I haven't even mentioned the part about my betrothed husband."

"Time out!" Parker put her hands to her head. "Enslaved. And it's been forty *years*? Is there even going to be a planet left, at this point? And that is the stupidest plan in the history of stupid plans. And you're talking to someone who's been dealing with Bel all semester." Parker took a long breath. "Okay, skipping that part-- husband?"

"Thank you! That's my point exactly! And it's why I refused to follow Max on this stupid quest to find out more information. After everything that happened last year, you'd think he'd want to keep a low profile for a while." She shook her head, "But no, he knows best and he's determined to find out more."

"And yes, a husband. Tess was, is, Max's bride. And Michael? The guy I've treated like a second brother for then years? Is my betrothed husband. That's a level of squick I cannot even describe." Isabel stopped and put her face in her hands, rubbing her eyes, before looking up and continuing. "That's why I left. I couldn't deal with Max's quest, and Michael, despite the fact that he's completely in love with someone else, was insisting that we needed to spend time together because that's the way things were supposed to be."

"Idiots. Male idiots." Parker sighed. "I'd want to know more, but if your brother was being pushy about it, I can see how a break would be necessary. And betrothal-- ick. A galaxy of ick. Jesus. You're only sixteen? Seventeen? And it's too weird to contemplate." Her eyes narrowed as she processed the first part of what Isabel had said. "What happened last year?"
