Stopping to get them each a beer at the bar, Dean led the way over to a free table. "This looks like it'll do," he said.

Meg ran a finger along the edge of the pool table. "How do we decide who goes first?"

Dean inclined his head to her. "Ladies first." He turned to pick them out cues. "Have you played before?"

"Uh, no, not really. I've watched before." she said. "There was a phase a few years ago where the pool hall was the place to hang out."

"I never would have pegged you for a pool hall type of girl," Dean teased. "Okay, I'll assume you know the basics of how it's played and it's just the mechanics we need to work on."

She nodded. "Take the cue, hit the ball. I got that part."

"There's a little more to it if you want to be good," Dean said with a grin. "How's your geometry?"

"Pretty good." she said. "At least I think it is."

From:

"Pool's all about angles," Dean explained. "If you can figure those out, you can figure out where to hit the cue ball to make it do what you want."

She nodded and placed the cue in front of the white ball. "This part doesn't matter, right? I just want to break up the triangle?"

"You want a good forceful break," Dean said. "If you do it just right, you can sink some balls right off it."

"Alrighty..." Meg leaned down and hit the ball with as much force as she could. The triangle broke but none of the balls went too far. She did look really excited about doing that much.

"So how exactly are we going to play this?" Isabel asked. "Guys vs girls? Couples? And what are the stakes?"

"Stakes are going to depend on what the teams are," Wyatt said. "Because the prize I might want to claim from you would be different from, say, Dean."

"I'm wounded, really," Dean told him.

Meg giggled. "I think guys versus girls would make things more interesting. That way we can rub in in your face when we win."

"I have to agree with that," Isabel nodded, as she chalked her cue and blew the excess powder off.

Dean smirked. "I hope you won't be too disappointed when we wipe the table with you."

"Maybe we should give them a handicap," Wyatt snickered. "To make it fair."

Meg smirked. "So what are the stakes for this thing? Or is that something that should be arranged in private?"

"I'm thinking the winners get pampering of some sort," Isabel suggested. "That's general enough for now. The details can be worked out in private negotiations."

"Works for me," Dean agreed with an eyebrow waggle.
