Isabel was waiting at the causeway at midnight, the keys to Rory’s car in hand.
Sipping a coffee, she mentally reviewed the list of things that needed to be done in the morning in order to make sure the party ran smoothly. Eyeing the sky she shrugged. She, Dawn and Molly had done their part. There had been dancing, jellybeans, and a very confused NPC piccolo player from the mainland. She could only hope it would work and the weather would be good.
~~~
Jarod walked up a few minutes later, backpack of essentials over his shoulder and carrying a bottle of Mountain Dew. "Good evening, Isabel. Fancy meeting you here." He smirked.
~~
“Hey Jarod,” Isabel said as she grinned at the Mountain Dew. “Cheers for caffeine. I looked up directions, it doesn’t seem like it too far away. So hopefully we won’t be out all night. What did you bring?” she asked, glancing at the backpack.
~~
"No, it's not far at all," Jarod agreed, then smiled, "and I brought a number of things that will hopefully be helpful but are probably better for you not to know about." Lockpicks, a number of fake ids, a hat and sunglasses...
~~
Isabel raised an eyebrow. “Just promise me it’s nothing that’ll get us arrested for transporting it over state lines.” She hit the remote to unlock the doors as they started walking towards the car. “I’m driving. But you can pick the music.”
~~
Jarod actually had to think about that. "You'll be fine." He opened the door and threw his backpack into the back seat of the car. "I can drive, you know. But I didn't know to bring music. Still kind of new at the road trip."
~~
““Don’t think I didn’t catch that pause,” Isabel laughed. “Just be ready with a good cover story, just in case we need one.” She opened the driver’s door and climbed in. “I’m not saying you can’t. But since I’m the one that borrowed the car, I feel responsible for it. And there’s no worries about the music. I brought my own.” Isabel plugged her iPod into the adaptor. “There’s a ton of music on there. Your job is to pick out the music appropriate to our mission." She paused, thinking about it. "We’ll have to fix your lack of road trip experience. Where would you like to go?”
~~
Jarod had a cover story--it's just that it was different depending on which ID he pulled. He scrolled through the iPod obediently. "Is there music that's appropriate to our mission? And I'm not sure--I've been to Parker's country house, and to New York. I haven't been anywhere else, but I'd love to see it all."
~~
“Classic rock is good. Or remakes of classic rock songs. I just downloaded the new cover of Life is a Highway,” she suggested. “It’s perfect for driving late at night.” Isabel glanced over at Jarod as she pulled the car out of the parking lot and onto the causeway heading towards the mainland. “I’ve seen Southern California while we were on family vacations. But there is still so much more out there. I haven’t been to New York. Or Europe. I’d love to see the pyramids. But I don’t think that’ll happen. At least not anytime soon.”
~~
Jarod made some iPod selections accordingly. "Do you do a lot of late night driving?"
"New York was a lot of fun--a little strange, in retrospect, since Parker and I were there as friends, since Lorne had been nice enough to invite us both. I'd love to see the temples in Greece, the British Isles, Belgium..." He glanced out the window, thinking of Sydney. "Why don't you think you'll be able to see Egypt? Is it going somewhere?"
~~
“None since I’ve been at Fandom. But back in Roswell we did our share of late night trips when we were out searching for clues. This is better,” she laughed. “I don’t have to worry about being caught by my mom sneaking back into my room.”
“It’s not. But I am at some point.”
~~
"Searching for clues for what?" Jarod asked, "and where are you going? "
~~
“The whole alien thing. Who we are, where we’re from.” Isabel looked out the window, watching for the signs leading to the interstate. “Part of what we’ve found out is that at some point we’re supposed to return to our planet and save them from the man who overthrew my brother.”
~~
"Two more signals, then a right," Jarod said casually. "Overthrew your brother?"
~~
“Thanks, I haven’t been off island that much since I got here,” she said. “Max was king. He was overthrown and we were killed. We were recreated as hybrids so we could come here and develop our powers in safety.”
Isabel made the turn onto the on ramp of the interstate, carefully accelerated and merged into the traffic flow. “Or at least that was the plan. But then the crash happened and it all went to hell. We’re making it up as we go along now. Fitting pieces of information into the puzzle as we find them.”
~~
"Are you having any luck finding information?" Jarod asked, than suggested, "I might be able to help with that, if you want."
~~
“Thank you,” Isabel said sincerely. “But no. Like I said at the prom, it is way, way, way too dangerous for anyone else to be involved. We’re finding things out slowly. Which is probably for the best even if it is frustrating as hell.” She sighed, once again thinking of what she’d read in Special Collections.
“Tell me,” Isabel said in an attempt to change the subject. “How are Becky and the Ninja to leave with? Archery has been fun, but Miho is still scary.”
Jarod thought about that for a minute. "They're actually better than you'd expect--we all keep to ourselves for the most part." He shrugged, "Okay, sometimes you come into the Sin after a date to find a guy bleeding in the lobby because he's been shot, but I've been told it happens."
"They may be a little too interested in my relationship with Parker, though," he grimaced, looking out the window at the darkness.
~~
Isabel snickered. “If you’re talking about GOB? He probably deserved it. Which I know sounds terrible to say, but he’s just creepy.”
“Parker and I talked about that once. She said it’s like you have two very scary older sisters.”
~~
"Yes, it was GOB," Jarod wondered how she knew that. "And why do you call him creepy? I know his views towards women are a little outdated..."
"That's....hmmm." He wasn't sure how he felt about having sisters at all, let alone sisters like Becky and Miho, who were nice, but lethal. "I know she wants me to move out and get a different job, but they've been extremely good to me." Jarod sighed.
~~
"He made a half hearted attempt at hitting on me the night of the Prom," Isabel explained, wrinkling her nose in distaste. "I'm seventeen. He's older. Much, much older. It was just icky and uncomfortable."
"Oh I know that and she knows that. I think they're just intimidating. Not that Parker would ever let someone intimidate her, but..." Her voice trailed off and she hoped that Jarod would understand what she was trying to say.
~~
"I can see how that might be uncomfortable," Jarod conceded, "but I don't think he means anything by it--besides, him cheating on Becky would him more discomfort than you could ever imagine." He chuckled, imagining that scenario.
Jarod smiled fondly into the darkness. "No, there's not much that intimidates Parker." What scared her? Well, that was a different story.
~~
Isabel chuckled. “True, very true. On both counts.”
Reaching down, she turned up the radio. “Okay Jarod, here’s an important part of the road trip. The sing along. Feel free to join in.” Smiling happily, she started signing along with the Indigo Girls. I’m trying to tell you something about my life, Maybe give me insight between black and white, And the best thing you’ve ever done for me, Is to help me take my life less seriously, Its only life after al...l
~~
Jarod didn't sing much, not knowing the words to most of the songs, but enjoying the sounds of Isabel singing along. He visibly tensed with every mile they got closer to Blue Cove, directing Isabel through the small town.
"Stop here. We'll walk the rest of the way." If they got discovered, he'd be the distraction so Isabel could get away quickly. Jarod closed the car door, but not enough to latch it. "Follow me," Jarod walked quietly through the woods, approaching the Parker house from the back, knowing exactly where he was going.
~~
She hesitated for a moment, picking up on Jarod’s tension. But then took a breath and followed. “We don’t have to do this,” Isabel said quietly as she caught up to him. “We’re both taking a risk.”
~~
"We are." He took a deep breath, than flashed a grin at Isabel. "No, we're here now, and this'll be quick. I'm just sorry we won't get to see the look on his face."
~~
“Don’t worry. I’m sure Parker will tell us every last detail. After she gets finished yelling at us,” Isabel said with a quiet laugh. “Do you know where it is?”
~~
Jarod waved Parker's yelling off. Not like she didn't yell at him regularly anyway. After a minute, he pointed to a carport that wasn't attached to the house. "There." Of course Mr. Parker would embrace the tradition of a detached garage over the convenience, but vulgarity, of having an attached garage.
He slipped quietly across the lawn, avoiding the light, than motioned Isabel forward.
~~
Isabel followed, sticking to the shadows, and grateful she thought to wear dark clothes. As they approached the carport she grinned, a clear picture of what she wanted to do already in her head.
jarodpretends No interaction possible. Okay to say they left. But where is NFB due to distance.]
