Meerkat Cabin, Isabel's Alcove, After lunch

After lunch Isabel faced the fact that packing couldn't be put off any longer. Her bag was open on her bed as she sorted through her clothes.

"We do," Isabel said with a grin. "Then we sit around and do each other's nails." She made a face at her bag. "Yes, I'm heading back to Roswell for a bit."

"Invite me next time?" Cedric asks and gives her his best charming smile.

"And you are? Is everything all right?"

She smirked, "I'll keep that in mind."

"I am. Things seem to be okay. But my folks miss me and have shanghied me into visiting." Isabel smiled at Cedric, "This means it's my turn to ask you to look after Jack."

"A trip home sounds pleasant though," Cedric says. "It sounds nice. And I will. About Jack, I mean."

"We'll see," she said, rolling her eyes. "It's Roswell. Lately weirdness and angst are sort of ineveitable."

"And thank you. I'm worried about him."

"But you're parents miss you," he says and tries to smile. "I'm sure it will be pleasant enough."

He frowns then and asks, "Why are you worried?"

Isabel realized who she was talking to and suddenly felt incredibly bad. "I'm sorry. I must sound so ungrateful. You still haven't heard anything?" she asked quietly.

She wasn't sure how much Jack had told Cedric, so she kept her answer vague. "I just think this trip was hard on him since he didn't find the answers he was looking for."

"Not as of yet," he says and shrugs. "It's fine, really. I shouldn't mope. Who knows if they even receive mail if it's not via owl."

Frowning again, he says, "We haven't gotten much time to talk since he returned. It's been busy. Hectic."

"Well if you haven't heard from them by the time I get back, then we're going to have to come up with an alternate plan," Isabel said firmly. "There's got to be a way."

"Pin him down if you get a chance. He'd probably like it," she laughed.

"Maybe," he says and tucks his hands in his pockets. "As for pinning Jack down, again, maybe. But, I'll try and talk to him if you're worried. And I'll make sure he behaves himself."

"Good. I know you'll do a good job." She smiled, "I'll bring you back a tacky souvenier. How about that?"

He laughs and says, "I think I'd like that. No one's gotten me a souvenir from America before. You'll be safe?"

"You say that now. Wait till you see what odd piece of plastic I bring back," Isabel chuckled. "I should be. And if things get hairy, I've got various people on speed dial so they can mount a rescue mission."

"Good," he says, nodding. "I don't have a phone but I have a broom, if needed."

Isabel burst out laughing and reached out to hug Cedric. "I'm not laughing at you. I'm just picturing how my brother and my friends would react if you swooped down out of the sky in front of the Crashdown. Thank you, I needed that laugh."

He returns her hug and joins in the laughter. "I'd do it, too. And offer them a ride if it would help break the tension."

"I know you would," she said, still laughing. "It might even work to. Or while they're thinking it over, we can use the time to get away."

"If you should need to get away, I'll be there as quickly as I can," he says and nods firmly. "Except I don't know where Roswell is so it wouldn't be as quickly as I'd like. But quick enough!"

"It's in New Mexico, out in the Southwest," Isabel explained. "It's very different from here. Lots of desert."

"Desert? Lots of sand, I'm guessing?" He smiles and says, "It does sound very different from here."

"Lots of sand, very dry, and very hot," she said. "Also very brown. I like to go out at night though. The sky is beautiful. It's like it goes on forever.""

"Wear your sunscreen," he mock orders. "No sunburns."

"I promise," Isabel said. "No scorching for me. And you make sure you use it if you make it back to the beach."

"I promise," he says. "Be safe and have a safe trip."
