Meerkat, Isabel's Alcove, early afternoon

Isabel didn't get in until late Friday night after spending the evening swimming at the beach. That means her plans for a hot and humid Saturday included sleeping in and and then some brain candy. Sprawled on her bed, she's re-reading the newest pirate/ninja novel and snickering.

Her curtain is open.

Dawn peeked her head in, sniffling a little. Her eyes were also probably red. "Hi, Isabel."

"Hi!" she said, snickering as she closed the book. "Like that's not going to leave marks in intertesting places." Isabel looked up at Dawn and blinked, somehow the Dawn before her didn't match the happy Dawn she'd seen last night. "What's wrong?"

"Dean," she sniffled, sitting cross-legged on the bed. "We made plans...and today, he didn't know me. And he was smarmy."

"What?" Isabel asked increduously. "That makes no sense. He was all boyfriendy and normal when I talked to him last night. He didn't know you? At all?"

"He was very boyfriendy last night!" Dawn gestured wildly with her hands, then whined, "and today he didn't know my naaaaaame and said Dean was a square."

"Okay, that's bizarre," she agreed. Isabel bit her lip thoughtfully. "Did you notice any bite marks?"

"If he had them, they were totally from that skank who was attached to him at the hip," she punched Isabel's pillow.

Isabel raised her hands in the universal gesture for time-out. "Whoa, there was a skank attached to him? Who? And do we need to kill her for taking advantage of your boyfriend when he's obviously not himself? He has to have been bitten by a gremlin or something."

"I don't know," Dawn said, never having met Ivanova. "Dark hair, draped all over him like he was hers," she punched the pillow again, obviously upset. "I told him not to come near me." Dawn sniffled again, and started to cry.

There are enough dark haired girls in Fandom that Isabel doesn't have a clue who it could be. Reaching out she patted Dawn's shoulder sympathetically. "Dawn you know he wouldn't do that to you intentionally. There has to be something wrong. Usually when people act all out of character like that around here it means they've been bitten by a gremlin." Of course all the gremlins had been exterminated way back in the beginning of the Spring semester, but Isabel didn't tell Dawn that.

"Gremlins? Really?" Dawn looked at Isabel hopefully. "Does it happen a lot?"

"It hasn't in a while. They brought in exterminators after a bunch of people got bit at once," Isabel explained wanly. "But they could have come back."

"Can we shoot them if we find them?" Dawn asked, now in a slightly better mood. Maybe she was more like Buffy than she'd thought. "Because I can go look now."

"Guns violate the weapons ban. But I've heard croquet malllets work well," she said, glad to see Dawn looked a little happier.

"I could get a big stick..."

"Get two. I'll help," Isabel said. "I don't want to be a victim. The good news is, the effects usually wear off in about twenty four hours."

There was a noise from the bathroom and Isabel shook her head. "Thank god we're moving back to the dorms."

Dawn rolled her eyes as well. "I hear cold water and superglue work well for this kind of a situation."

After Dawn

After leaving the bathroom, Aeryn passes by Isabel's alcove on the way to her own. There's a thought of omgtherewerepeoplehere and as soon as John's settled in her own bed, she comes by and greets Isabel with, "You're not singing."

Isabel tried very hard not to snicker. She was mostly successful. Mostly. "No, I'm not. Should I be?"

"It's been a long two weeks," Isabel pointed out. "I guess people get desperate."

"There was singing in the gym this morning. I thought everyone would still be doing that," she says, and she's ignoring the snicker, yes.

"I've been here all day. I slept in, got up, showered." Yes, there was blushing. "And have been here reading ever since. But Dawn said Dean was weird this morning. Maybe that's a part of it?"

"But in our bathroom?" Dawn glanced in that direction. "And when everyone's still awake?"

"Probably," she agrees, and manages not to hit her head against any hard surfaces. It's a feat. "Something has to be going on. But um. At least it's not everyone."

"It's the only place with walls and a door that locks." She shrugged, "Maybe they got caught up in the heat of the moment."
