Room 406, afternoon into evening

Isabel has not been having the best time of it the last week or so. There'd been the horrendous trip to LA, coming back to find out that Jack was in trouble, and then fighting with Greg. The only thing that could make things worse would be a call from Max with more of his particular brand of stupidity.

Too keyed up to even attempt sleep, Isabel sat on her bed and floated the nerf balls from the day at the beach with Cedric and Jack through the air in a complicated pattern. It was easier to focus on that then think about how closely the argument she had with Greg paralleled why everyone was mad at Jack.

The door was open.

"Being aware of everything going on during a fight takes practice," Anakin said softly. "Don't be too hard on yourself for that." He stretched his legs out. "Who's Alex?"

"I'm trying not to be. Peter already called me a hero for helping. I don't know that I'd go that far. But at least I tried to help. There was a time I wouldn't have done that."

Isabel mimicked Anakin's position leaning against the bed. "Remember my friend that got killed back in March? That was Alex." She held out her hand until one of the small framed photos on her desk floated down to it and held it out to Anakin. "That's him. He was friends with Liz and Maria, so when they found out the truth, of course he eventually did as well."

Anakin smiled. "We do what we do and let other people decide what to call it," he said. "At least that's what Obi-Wan says."

He took the picture. "He looks like a nice guy," he said finally. "Happy." He tilted his head to look at Isabel. "How did he take the news?"

"He was. Happy, sweet, funny," Isabel smiled, remembering. "In the beginning he had questions. Who wouldn't? But it didn't matter to him, what I was. He liked me, for me."

Anakin smiled back. "So where's the regret?"

"Because I got scared. I watched Max and Liz, Michael and Maria...they got so close," she said with a sigh. "But we didn't know enough. And I wasn't ready to take a risk until we had answers." Isabel took the picture back and stared at it. "I thought we'd have more time. That we'd get answers, figure out what was going, and then I could decide. But then we found out about the whole Destiny thing, and I ran away and came here."

"It's a hell of a risk to take," Anakin said. "I'm guessing," he said quickly. "Jedi don't do...that kind of closeness."

"It is," Isabel said, raising her eyebrow the tiniest bit. Anakin really needed to remember that she lived across the hall from him and saw the comings and goings from his room. "Like now. I still don't know if Greg will be staying." She sighed and put her head down. "Not that it matters now," she muttered quietly.

Anakin ignored the eyebrow raise. He was very good at not seeing things he didn't want to.

He put a hand on her shoulder. "What happened with Greg?" he asked.

Isabel has spent enough time on the River Denial that she's bought a timeshare there. Still she understands secrets, so she let it go.

"Nothing I can't deal with," she said quickly, remembering that Anakin didn't particularly like Greg.

"Did he hurt you?" Anakin asked. "Because I could go toss him into the hedgehog closet again."

"It's okay. Really," Isabel assured him. "We were both just being stubborn."

"Okay," Anakin said, looking at her closely. "But it sounds like you've had a tough couple of days. Is there anything I can do?"

"Honestly? Just having someone to talk to has helped a lot," she promised. "I appreciate it."

"That I'm always around for," Anakin said with a small smile. He paused. "For as long as I'm around, anyway."

"Then I'm going to have to take advantage of that," she said. "And after that, who knows. Maybe I'll run into you in some interstellar bar one day."

Anakin looked wistful. "I know a few good ones," he said, standing up. "See you soon?"

"You will," she said, carefully pushing to her feet and opening her arms. "Hug?"

Anakin smiled. "Of course," he said, hugging her. "It'll get better," he said. "Promise."

"I know," Isabel said, squeezing Anakin tightly. "It always does."

"And if it doesn't, we suck it up," he replied with a grim smile, breaking away from the hug.

"And deal," she finished. "Cause that's what we do."

"Exactly," Anakin said, heading towards the door. "I'll talk to you soon, okay?"
