After visiting Jack, Isabel had returned to her room and started rereading Storms of Silver in preparation for Saturday's book signing.

"I'd argue that's true," Peter said, running a hand through his hair. The hair that ended up dropping down over his forehead was indeed brown. "That will never stop being freaky or awesome. Nicely done."

Isabel grinned. "Thanks, for some reason I've been getting lots of practice this summer. That's what? The third or fourth time I've changed it isn't it?"

"Fourth, but if you'll kindly remember, the first time wasn't my decision," Peter said.

It was difficult to look innocent when you're smirking, so Isabel gave up. "You guys deserved it. There were ducks for heavens sake!"

"Still, it was your decision to change my hair, not mine," Peter reaffirmed, smiling. "Just getting that out there."

"True, but it still counts as practice." She sat back, crossing her legs. "So how long will you be gone for? Not that I worry or anything."

"Sunday to Thursday," Peter said. "Just enough time to visit some friends, get some swing time in, and start to miss everyone here."

Isabel nodded. "That's how it usually works for me. Although there's no swing time. Instead I'm usually being annoyed by Max."

"I live the fun life with no siblings," Peter said. "Granted, I get the supervillains annoying me, which may be better or worse, I'm not sure."

"You can beat the crap out of the supervillians and get away with it," she pointed out. "I start bouncing Max off the walls? My mom is going to start wondering why. And how. Which would not be good."

"But it would feel good, you have to admit that," Peter joked.

"Oh god yes." Isabel rolled her eyes, "Would you believe that I really haven't spoken to him since I was home in July? I've been getting indirect messages when I talk to Maria and Liz. But we're both still in avoidance mode. It's easier for now."

"Wow," Peter said. "I'm sure that you'll get things patched up soon enough. And then bicker more and end up not speaking again in time. It cycles like that, right?"

"Eventually," she agreed. "Once he gets out of extreme stupid mode."

"And from what I know of him, that may be a while," Peter said.

"Sometimes I think hell will freeze over first," Isabel said with a wry smile. "Or that I'll look out the window and see flying pigs."

"They can do wild things with genetics these days. The day of the flying pig is sooner than you think," Peter said.

"Given the levels of stubbornness and stupidity he's been reaching? That's entirely possible," she agreed. "And can I say what a scary thought flying pigs are? Compared to bird droppings? Gah!"

"Sorry about that," Isabel chuckled. "Have a safe trip!" She watched him leave, still amused, then picked up her book and started to read.
