Isabel's in her room reading Crown Diamond and enjoying the idea of not having anything to do for the next few days.

The door's open and she's completely interruptable.

"This is the purplish prose imaginable," she replied. "The author messes up history, geography, and according to a friend of mine, she's written physically impossible love scenes. But Angelica is my favorite author." Briefly Isabel debated using her powers to turn on the stereo but she figured that fell under the category of being mean to the newbies.

"Smashing. Angelica... Demesnes?" Evie read the author's name off the cover of the book. "I shall have to go find her in the library. I read so much that's quite serious, I like very silly books on occasion as a break." She smiled at Isabel, then asked, "What class are you in? And how long have you been here? I'm trying to get a feel for how long it is before one stops gaping at every passing thing."

"The library aides all love her. I'm sure you'll find multiple copies." Isabel gestured at the extra bed/couch, "Take a seat, relax. I'm a junior and I've been here since January. and I hate to tell you but I'm still finding things to gape at."

"Oh, dear. I suppose that's a good thing, in that I won't be the only one. But it's rather discouraging for my own equilibrium." Evie perched on Isabel's day-couch, and shook her head, looking rueful. "I'm starting to keep a list of all the things I find confusing or new, and it's getting quite long. I'm ninety years in the future for me, just to begin with."

Isabel laughed. "I kept a similar list for the first month or so. I called it 'Only in Fandom'. It got to be rather long." Putting the book aside, Isabel turned to face the couch. "Ninety years? Wow, talk about culture shock. Any questions I can answer for you?"

"Oh, heavens. *So* many. Women have the vote, here in America, don't they? They were still working on that, when I left. The Germans didn't win the War? Dean mentioned that." She sighed heavily. "What's a computer? People keep telling me about it, but I have no idea what it is."

"We do yes," Isabel nodded. "And no they didn't. But you're talking about World War One aren't you? Unfortunately they tried again about twenty years later." Isabel reached over and pulled her laptop off her desk. "This is a computer. It has all kinds of programs on it that help me communicate or help with my classwork. It's really useful."

"They had another one? Oh, that's just not fair," Evie said, dismayed. She scooted forward to see the laptop, fascinated. "It looks like a miniature typewriter. With one of those television screens attached."

"Well when that one was over, Europe pretty much settled down. And other than a few minor conflicts in the area of Serbia and Bosnia, it's been pretty quiet for almost sixty years." Isabel opened up Word, Outlook, and Firefox. "This is a word processor. Instead of writing things out longhand, I type it in here. It'll be saved in the memory and then I can print it out when I need to." Minimizing that, she moved to Outlook. "This is my email program. It's like a way to send letters electronically. I can write a letter to my brother in New Mexico, and he'll get it almost instantly." Minimizing that, Isabel grinned, "I've saved the best for last."

Evie's following *most* of this, but it's still amazing. "Electronic letters. Oooo. Oh, Jonathan doesn't have one of these. So I suppose that he can't get this, umm, email?" She looked curiously at Isabel's grin, and smiled back, curious. "And what have you saved, then?"

"Unfortunately no, he would need one of these himself." Smiling, Isabel hit the link for Google. "Tell me something you're interested in."

"Welll... The Library at Alexandria, I suppose," Evie said, after a moment's consideration. "And the books that were destroyed there. It always makes me so sad to think of it."

Isabel googled 'Library at Alexandria' then turned the laptop to show Evie the results. "The computer just searched all across the internet and came up with these results. You can pick one and read it and it'll tell you about the Library. Or at least what the people who wrote that particular link knew."

"Eeeee!" Evie fell on her knees to get a better look and worship her new god and scanned the screen, enthralled. "Oh, oh, it's like a magic encyclopedia, isn't it? Or a periodical that just has *everything* -- ooooo. How do I 'pick' one? How on earth does this connect to the material?" She looked from the laptop wire to the wall, and pointed at it. "It just goes through the wires? That's unbelievable."

From: [identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com
"In a way it is," Isabel agreed. "The encyclopedia you're probably used to is pretty much out of date. Using the internet you can find all the most up to date information. You pick, by clicking on one of the links." She demonstrated by clicking on the link to the BBC which reported on the discovery of the site of the library. "The internet is probably one of the greatest inventions of the late twentieth century."

[off to do RL stuff or an hour.]

Evie smiled softly, touching the screen as she read about the discovery. "It's... oh, this is wonderful." She hugged herself, and smiled at Isabel, thrilled beyond words. "Thank you, Isabel. This is incredible. Thank you for showing me this."

"Anytime. Since you don't have a laptop of your own, you can go to the computer lab and do the same stuff there. They have all the same programs," Isabel smiled, pleased by Evie's evident delight. "So what do you think of Fandom so far? Have you met many people?"

[I'm not really here.]

"Quite a few, really. My roommate and my Big Brother, as well as some other people, on Sunday-- Alec and Dean Winchester and Hermione and Veruca and Jack. Ray this morning, and Janet. Chad and, and Dean Forrester. And Agnes. Nadia and Pip and Peter, who's also English...." Evie listed them off on her fingers, then added, "And Mac, just now, gave me some lovely coffee!"

"Who's your big brother?" Isabel asked. "Is he treating you right? Has he warned you about some of the oddities of Fandom?" Chuckling at the list of names, she shook her head. "You've been busy. And get ready to drink lots of coffee. It's the drink of choice around here."

"Blair Sandburg? Do you know him? He's a Sophomore, like me, but he's been here since January. He's ever so nice, and he's an anthropologist, so of course we hit it off right away. The admissions office *must* have read my application and paired us up, knowing how helpful he'd be." Evie nodded vehemently. "And yes, he warned me about most things, although I didn't believe him until yesterday that this was 2006, really. When I saw the tel-e-vision," She said carefully. "And Jack took me out for coffee, mochas! Which are delicious. Although I still prefer espresso."

"Blair's a sweetie, and whatever he's told you? You can believe him," Isabel promised. "He's really not the type to lie or tease anyone maliciously." Raising an eyebrow, Isabel asked, "Jack? Harkness?"

From: [identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com
"Yes, do you know him? He's a terrible flirt, but rather sweet in spite of it, I think. Did you know, he's from the fifty-first century?" Evie shook her head, overwhelmed. "And he's studying *here.* It would be as if I were allowed to study at Alexandria, before it was burned."

"Jack's one of my very best friends," Isabel smiled. "He's incredibly charming but he is a huge flirt, so keep that in mind." Nodding, she continued, "And I know. Sometimes I boggle at the number of times and places people come from. Did you know that we have students here from all over the world? And a few from different galaxies as well?

Date: 2006-08-30 10:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com
"Different *galaxies.* Agnes is from another world, but... somehow galaxies seem more incomprehensible, don't they?" Evie sighed happily. "Oh, Jonathan will never believe any of this. I do hope he gets to visit sometime."

"They do," Isabel admitted. "But it's the truth. And I hope your brother gets to visit. It's always nice when family comes to town."
