Room 406, afternoon

There's a blanket and some pillows on the extra bed, and she's moved some of her books and picture frames over to the extra so it doesn't look quite so empty. Isabel is sitting on the floor, puzzle mat spread out in front of her. She's made progress and the puzzle is almost all done. All that's left to do is fill in the blue background.

"I almost did as well. Remember when I went home back in March?" Isabel asked with a wry smile. "We almost wound up going back to the home planet. It was all I could do to write an email to Peter. And all I could think about was how you packed up and said good-bye to everyone that day without breaking down."

She chuckled at the possibility of Aeryn threatening people. "I'm sure everyone would make sure to keep you on their Christmas card list."

"I didn't know that," she says. "Though I'm glad you came back."

Then the last part sinks in. "There are lists at Chrissmass?"

"Not many people do," she admitted. "I'm glad to be back. I'm still going to have to go at some point. There's a planet to save after all. But hopefully I'll have a little more notice."

Isabel laughed, "You're talking to the wrong person about lists. I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to the holidays. But yes, people usually have a list of who they send Christmas cards to. Lots of times there are people on the list who only contact you through the Christmas card."

Aeryn nods, then lets it drop because she's had enough of people leaving for a week.

"With you around I might actually understand the holiday this time around," she says. "The cards are a completely new concept."

"Oh that's right. This was your first Christmas," Isabel said and then shook her head, thinking of what she'd heard about the Christmas pageant. She was sure that must have made one hell of an impression. "I take it no one really explained the holiday to you?"

"Christmas cards are a way of sending greetings for the holidays," she explained. "They're both good and bad. Good, because like I said, with some people it's the only contact you have with them all year. Bad, because you feel obligated to send them and there's always someone you miss. That's why I start making my lists up in September."

Aeryn raises her eyebrows. "September?"

"I'm obsessive," Isabel said sheepishly. "I like the holidays to be perfect. That means planning ahead."

"I'll remember that," she says with a smile. "Just... maybe in November."

Isabel laughed because she knew she did go overboard. "By November, I'm baking cookies and have most of my gifts bought and wrapped. But I'm insane."

"Then you can help me with mine," Aeryn says. "Except the baking, that might be a little... out of my range of abilities."

"You can put the colored sugar on the cookies before I bake them," Isabel smiled. "You'll be able to do that. Then you get first dibs when they come out of the oven."

Aeryn slowly shakes her head. "I think this is becoming one of those conversations I can't believe I have..."

"Why is that?" Isabel asked, curious.

"Baking. Me," says Aeryn, like that explains everything.

"You have a point," she agreed. "Somehow I can't picture you in an apron. But this is another one of those things were it's not so much what you do as who you do it with." Isabel smiled fondly, "I remember the first year I made cookies with my mom. The sugar was my job. Lately I've done cookies with my mom or with my friends. It's fun. Even if you don't actually do anything."

It sounds like she likes it, and Aeryn has to smile a little at that. "Maybe. We'll see," she agrees. "I should probably be getting back."

"I'll be sure to call you when I start," Isabel said. "If you have to, I'm sure John would like the company. But thanks for coming by."

She stands and starts towards the door. "I'll talk to you again soon," she says.
