Meerkat Cabin, Isabel's Alcove, After lunch

After lunch Isabel faced the fact that packing couldn't be put off any longer. Her bag was open on her bed as she sorted through her clothes.

"The cab's picking me up at four. My flight's at seven," she said. "I really should have had Bel shimmer me there, but that would have caused too many questions."

Molly grinned. "I bet it would. How long are you going to be gone?"

"If all goes well, I should be home next Saturday night," Isabel replied. "Hopefully I won't miss too much excitement."

"Yeah, a lot of stuff has happened recently. We're due for a little calm," Molly said with a grin. "Maybe Fandom will wait until you come back to throw the next weird thing at us."

"That would be good," she said and then shook her head. "You realize how odd that answer sounds when you think about it? Yes, please let the next invasion happen when I can be here for it? You think I'd be happy to go back to Roswell where there's only alien wierdness to worry about."

Molly giggled. "This place does grow on you."

"It does, doesn't it? Both the weirdness and the people." Isabel gave Molly a half smile, "Still it will be nice to see my family and friends again. The last time I was there, things were a little hectic."

Molly nodded. "I hope your trip home is more relaxing this time."

"You and me both," Isabel said with a sad smile. "I don't know if you knew or not, but that trip was for a friend's funeral. I definitely don't want to go through that again."

"Oh!" Molly said, a little shocked. "No, I didn't know. All I knew was that you had to go home suddenly. I'm so sorry, Isabel."

"Thank you," she said sincerely. "That's why my mom was pushing for this trip. She wants a nice calm, quiet visit, something we didn't get then. I hope I can give it to her."

"I hope so too," Molly said and then thought about what it must be like for Isabel to go home. "Do you think it will be hard to go back to hiding your powers? Even if it is just for a short visit?"

"Yes and no," she said. "I mean, I don't use them all that much around here. Well except for coloring peoples' hair it seems like. But it is going to be hard watching what I say. I can't just say 'oh Jarod and I took a road trip to prank Parker's father's car', because then they'll ask what did we do to the car. We gave it a lovely patriotic paint job by the way." Isabel sighed, "And I can't tell them that. Not because they don't know I'm an alien. But they don't know that everyone here knows that."

Molly giggled at the description of what she did to the car, but stopped quickly. "So, you're not only going to be keeping your powers secret from the people who don't know, you're going to have to keep secrets from the people who do know now too?"

Isabel nodded. "There are only four people in Roswell that know the truth about us. My own parents don't know because Max and Michael are that paranoid about keeping things secret. If they knew everyone here knew the truth? Their heads would explode."

"Oh, Isabel." Molly stepped forward to give her a hug. "That really sucks. There isn't anybody you can tell? Maybe if you told Max and Michael that there were other aliens here, they wouldn't mind so much."

"Thanks," Isabel said as she hugged her back. "There was a lot of other stuff that happened back in March, in addition to Alex dying. For a while, I almost didn't come back. But we got everything worked out, and I did. Part of working things out meant that I told them all about everyone here. So they know that truth. Still, they worry. There are other aliens that want us dead. So they feel the less people that know the truth, the safer we are."

Molly sighed. "And I thought just hiding from the authorities back home was bad. At least I didn't have to keep secrets from my friends."

And that was only one small part of the secrets she was keeping Isabel thought, remembering of what she'd read in Special Collections. "I don't like doing it. But right now? It's for the best."

"Well, I hope your trip isn't too stressful and that you have fun with your family and friends," Molly said. "I should let you get back to packing. I'm sorry you'll miss any pranking that goes on." She grinned.

"It should. Just from emailing and talking to everyone back there it seems quiet. I'm planning on spending the week sitting next to the pool." Isabel raised an eyebrow, "Is there pranking planned? I knew it had been too quiet."

Molly looked around to make sure no one could overhear. "Mostly I'm trying to keep the Stickbugs from pranking us," she said quietly. "I think everyone has agreed to work together, but no plans have come up yet. To be honest, I won't mind if nothing happens."

"Quiet wouldn't be a bad thing," Isabel agreed. "But somehow I can't see the guys agreeing with that. So I'm sure I'll miss some sort of prank or another."

"We'll take pictures," Molly assured her with a nod.

"I'm bringing my laptop so I can keep up with the radio podcasts. Feel free to email me with pictures of anything fun," she said. "Particularly if it winds up involving Gregette, Petra or Johnina."
