Room 406, Saturday Evening

It's been a busy few days. There was a interesting and enlightening Conversation with Sam. Then somehow talking about evil aliens in Constant Vigilance had devolved into talking about leather and fishnets with Cedric. She'd nearly hyperventilated at Festivus and helped protest for a dance floor at Caritas. Last night she'd stayed up late looking after and accidently dreamwalking Jack. Toss in cheering at the basketball game and a gremlin on the loose, it's no wonder Isabel not in the mood for the common rooms tonight.

Sprawled on her bed, she flipped through a magazine, quietly mocking the clothes the celebs were wearing.

The door's open.

"Hey stranger! What's up?"

"Here," he said, handing over a small box. "If you can figure out why I'm giving that to you besides the obvious theme, I'll buy you a J,GoB cookie next time I'm out in town."

Isabel opened the box and blinked. "Well I'd say the obvious theme is the alien one. The not so obvious one? Hmmm... Does it have to do with spinning?"

"Nope. Nothing to do with spinning," Peter said. "Try again."

"I should point out I'm only working on about four hours of not so good sleep," Isabel said. "My brain is kind of fried. It's a top, it's also a wind-up toy. Am I at least on the right track?"

"Nope. It's fiendishly simple, actually, and has more to do with me than anything else," Peter said.

"I think I'll be cookieless then," she said sadly. "I can't make my brain work."

"I had a few extra bucks, was bored, and had the completely random urge to give it to you," Peter said. "Not much to tell, really, except that after buying this I don't have enough to buy you a cookie anyway. So it all works out."

"I'm touched and honored," Isabel smiled. "I'll treasure it always. And I'll buy the cookies."

"No need to treasure it. It's just a top," Peter said. "But I do thank you for the future cookies."

"No problem. Actually, I have something for you as well," she said, getting up from the bed and rummanging in her dresser. She returned and held out a small vial and a folded t-shirt. "It's just a little something from home."

"Heh," Peter laughed. "That's awesome. Will I actually find anything cool if I do an analysis on the sample?"

"I seriously doubt it," she laughed. "Particularly since it's not even from the crash site. Mrs. Deluca had Michael fill that with sand from her yard."

"Maybe Mrs. Deluca is a mutant who leaves traces of radioactivity wherever she steps?" Peter suggested.

"Mrs. Deluca is Maria's mom. She's pretty powerful when it comes to batting people around with a newspaper, but she's not a mutant." Isabel chuckled,

"Well, it could still be interesting to look at desert dirt under a microscope and make note of the inherent differences with dirt from here," Peter said. "Sometimes you have to try hard to be a nerd."

Isabel rolled her eyes. "Be sure to include your roommate in that experiment. Actually I promised him a cell sample, not dirty thank you very much, at one point. That might be a bit more interesting."

"Biology. I have enough issues trying to work out my own cell samples, alien hybrid ones would just give me more to consider," Peter said.

"But think of the fun. You could combine them and come up with a new life form." Isabel thought about that for a second. "Which is proabably a very bad thing."

Peter hung his head. "That's not something I can ever let happen ever again."

After taking a deep breath, he lifted his head and changed the subject. "So, looking forward to the new school year? It's just around the corner."

"Ouch, sorry," she said quietly.

"I am," Isabel said with a small smile. "This semester I think I'll try some of the more unusual classes Fandom offers. What about you?"

"I'll probably backpedal and get my nose back into the science courses, depending on what's available," Peter said. "Couldn't hurt to get back to that first love."

"I'll be avoiding those. Science was always Max and then Liz's great love," she said. "I just whatever I take is interesting. One or two of the ones last semester were pretty dry."

"I'm a science nerd, through and through," Peter said. "It bugged me that I didn't take any science courses last semester. I can't go that long without them."

"Oh no, should I get you a science textbook before you start going into withdrawls?" Isabel teased.
