Room 406, early evening

The carnival had been fun, and Isabel had enjoyed the chance to catch up with Angel, hang out with Parker and try her hand at some of the games. Technically using her powers wasn't cheating if the game was already rigged.

"Don't do it," she called out as Annie started to stalk the hedgehog. "That's for Greg. Not for you." Isabel held out her hand, sending one of Annie's toys bouncing across the floor. Distracted, the kitten bounded away from the stuffed animal.

With Annie distracted, Isabel concentrated on getting her hair into a twist, with a few tendrils falling about her face. Finally she slipped on her garters and stockings, then pulled on her dress. A look at the clock showed she still had time to spare.

The door was closed but knockable.

"Thanks," Isabel smiled. "I hope Greg likes it as well." She motioned towards the desk chair. "Take a seat, I'll see what I can do?"

"Oooh, okay," she said, sitting down. "Thank you, Isabel. And he's going to love it. How could he not?"

"Sometimes I think I could wear burlap and he'd like it," Isabel laughed as she disappeared into the bathroom for a moment before returning with a container of bobby pins and a brush. "How about if I do it up in a loose knot? And then leave some long curls hanging?"

"You can do that?" Dawn glanced back over her shoulder at Isabel. "Because I'm kind of impaired when it comes to my head."

"I can," she said, starting to gather up Dawn's hair. "It was either learn how to do different things or spend my whole life with it up in a ponytail.

"I can manage a braid and pigtails, but that's about it," Dawn said, trying to sit still.

"A twist is pretty easy," Isabel said, doing just that Dawn's hair. A few bobby pins later and it was secure. "The trick is to use enough bobby pins."

"Load me up, then," Dawn instructed. "I don't want it to fall down until Sam's...er, until I'm ready to take it down."

Isabel snickered, "Suuuurrrreee, You'll be taking it down on all on your own. Yup."

"I will! Maybe."

"I hope you don't," Isabel smiled. "Just remember, baby steps. It's more fun that way."

She exhaled hard. "Baby steps. Right. You still good with that?"

"Ummm... Funny you should mention that," she said, twirling a section of Dawn's hair around her finger and concentrating on it for a moment. When she let it go it was curly. "I was thinking maybe it might be time to take a bigger step."

"Like...how big a step? Like the step? Or just heading towards the stairs?"

"We've been taking baby steps all along," Isabel said, focusing on Dawn's hair. "And now maybe it's time to take the step. I don't know, I'm trying to work up the courage to ask him."

"Really?" Dawn asked, slightly wide-eyed.

"Yeah. I love him," Isabel said quietly as she continued to curl the loose pieces of Dawn's hair. "He loves me. Maybe it's time."

"Maybe it is," Dawn smiled. "I'm sure you'll do whatever is best for you."

"We'll see. The trick is going to be getting through the conversation without flailing or dying of embarassment." She pinned one last curl in place and stepped back. "There. Perfect. What do you think?" she asked, holding out a mirror.

"Oh, Isabel," Dawn squealed gleefully as she turned her head one way and the next. "It looks fabulous. Thank you sooooo much!"

"You'll be brilliant," she said, giving Isabel a quick hug.

"Glad I could help," Isabel smiled, returning the hug. "Sam is going to be speechless and you guys are goingto have a wonderful time tonight."

Dawn looked down at herself. "Okay, should have put the dress on first." She picked up the dress, unzipped it, slipped off her robe, and stepped into it.

Once it was settled, she presented Isabel with her back. "Zip me, please? It's either you or Sam."

"I'll do the zipping, Sam can do the unzipping. Which totally contradicts the baby steps thing," she laughed as she zipped up the dress. "Although if he does it with his eyes closed and then you immediately change into oversized flannel pjs that cover everything, you'll still be okay.

"Yeah, I'm not sure it's going to happen exactly like that," she said, blushing a little bit.

"Well whatever happens, I'm sure it's going to be perfect," Isabel said. "Now you'd better get going. You don't want to keep him waiting too long."
