Room 406, evening

Isabel had spent the day hiking through the preserve, using the time and the quiet to try and process the events of the last few months. A week with friends had helped and she was finally starting believe that being back wasn't just another elaborate dream.

After returning, Isabel settled down for a quick check of her email before starting her homework. Frowning at Sam's message, she thought for a long moment before typing a response and then leaving a voicemail. Still distracted, she put the laptop aside and tried to focus on her homework.

The door was open.

After a day training with Mr. Winchester and an evening doing rituals with Xander, Mel, and Willow, Dawn had gone back to her room, planning on surfing the web for a while, when she'd checked her e-mail and found Sam's e-mail of stupidity.

So now she stomped into Isabel's room to vent, because Isabel had said she could. "So, my boyfriend's a dumbass," she announced, then flopped on the bed. "I think it may be terminal."

"I'm not going to disagree with you," Isabel said, getting to her feet and going for the secret chocolate stash. "What was he thinking?"

Dawn rolled her eyes. "I have no idea. Although he pretty much hates Alec, so it could be anything."

"Have you talked to him yet?" she asked, returning with the bag of Dove eggs. "And pointed out the inherent stupidity of pissing off the trained assassin?"

"Here, have chocolate," Isabel said, offering her the bag. "What are you going to say?"

Dawn took an egg, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth. "That he was stupid?"

"That works," she nodded. "Short, succint, and very much to the point."

"Just...gah!" Dawn threw up her hands. "I mean, how can you do that to someone? I get that Alec's dangerous, but come on, he's not more dangerous than most of everyone else here!"

"No, he's not," Isabel agreed. "I mean come on, Bel, Angel when he was here. Me even at this point. He let me paint his fingernails last summer."

She shook her head, remembering the previous year. "Ironically enough? It was this time last year when something similar happened to me."

"What did you do?" Dawn decided not to point out that sitting still for nail polish didn't make you a good person. "Maybe we can just ban mass exposery e-mails in March."

"Honestly? Nothing. There was so much going on then," she replied quietly. "My friend had just died, we'd almost just left and went back to Antar. I was really to numb to react."

"Isabel, Isabel, Isabel. My favorite alien, and I know a few, even if you are a Meerkat." He grinned and was obviously kidding around. "How's it going?"

"Hey Charlie," Isabel smiled as she looked up from reading Sam's reply. "It's going okay. I'm just getting used to being back."

"I heard you left town. Couldn't keep away or weird time factor?"

She actually coming to terms with it, so it's easy enough to to nod and smile wryly. "Weird time factor. Five days here, six months there."

"Ouch," he replied with sympathy. That was one thing he really didn't ever want to have happen to him. Sadly, his player was sadistic, so he was going to cop it eventually. "Well I'm glad you're back. You may be a Meerkat, but you're a Gremlin first and it wouldn't be the same without you."

"Thanks," Isabel nodded. "It's good to be back. I missed this place like you wouldn't believe. But the flood and fish being thrown against my window were a good welcome back."

"You missed Jamie doing synchronized swimming in the park. Swan Lake with explosions like you've never seen it before."

"Somehow, that just doesn't surprise me," she laughed.

"So you want to be green for St. Patrick's Day?"

"Not entirely green, just the hair. That bright fluro green from last time if you can!" He bounced. Dweeb.

"I can do that," Isabel grinned, getting to her feet and reaching for his hair. "And I promise to leave your clothes alone this time."

Kawalsky snorted. "Yeah, I'd appreciate that. Don't want to get arrested for public indecency."

"No, that would be bad. Although Aeryn might like the company. I am sorry about that by the way. I should have stayed out of it." As she spoke she ran her fingers through his hair, turning it a perfectly approrpriate St. Patrick's day green.
