Platypus Living Room - Evening

The number of candles Isabel had burning to light up the living room would probably make a fire marshall nervous but she wasn't about to put them out.

Her laptop battery had run down, so she settled for sitting on the floor and playing solitare the old fashioned way. With a deck of cards.

"All right." Anything to keep his mind off goodbyes.

"Good." Isabel started to deal the cards evenly between them. "Did you say good-bye to Sam?" she asked quietly.

"Yes," he said, staring at the cards.

"I did to. I promised to email pictures and updates to her," she told him. "So she won't miss out on too much."

"I...did the same," he said slowly.

"Good," Isabel nodded. "I'm sure she'll like that."

And in an attempt not to drown in emo, "How was your workshop yesterday?"

"Insane." That was the best word to describe it.

"Oh? Insane even by Fandom standards?"

She flipped a card, the three of clubs, over between them. "So the game is called SlapJack."

"Yes, even by Fandom standards," he said. "How do you play?"

"I might have to stop by and check it out. Because that's a pretty scary level of insanity."

Isabel pointed towards the cards she'd dealt him. "We take turns flipping our cards over until a jack turns up. Then you have to try and slap your hand down on it. The person who gets it first gets it and all the cards underneath it. The person who gets all the cards wins."

He eyed her warily. "Can you turn the cards into different cards with your fingers?"

"I promise I won't," she said solemnly. "It's not fun to cheat like that." She'll stick to possibly stacking the deck.

"You won't slap my hand too hard either, will you?"

"Not too hard. Really." Isabel was the picture of innocence. Really.

"You've lied to me before," he said and eyed her again.

"I wouldn't hurt you," she said seriously. "Ever."

He had to look away at that, blinking suddenly. Stupid emotions.

"Right." He tapped the cards. "Let's play."

"Go for it," Isabel said, bumping his knee with her foot. "I've put out a card, we take turns."

He tossed a five of spades out. And refrained from slapping.

She quickly flipped out an eight of hearts.

He was careful to watch to make sure that eight didn't suddenly change. When it didn't, he flipped down a king of diamonds.

Too busy trying to look innocent, it took a second for Isabel to realize that the next card she flipped over was a jack. Once she did, she tried to slap her hand down on it.

And Cedric was too busy making sure she was innocent that he TOTALLY missed the jack and scowled at her.

Isabel stuck her tongue out at him. "You have to watch the cards. Not me silly!"

"I'm new to this game," he said and glared at the cards. "Learning curve."
