New York City Road Trip, Day Three

So far the trip had been great.

But there was still plenty of things to see before the roadtrippers returned to Fandom tonight.

"I bet you could have as well, because I would not be foolish enough to try running up eighty six flights of stairs!" he proclaimed. "I would take the elevator and be waiting for you at the top."

"I'd just make Altra jump me up here," he said but kept his voice low.

Karal stomach rolled at the thought. "I would still take the elevator, and you could be waiting for me." He lowered his voice. "Jumping makes me ill, though for such a short distance, it might not be as bad."

"Why does it do that?" Gavin asked. "Make you ill?"

"I am not sure, it just does. Something about travelling through the void..." He shrugged. "Not everyone is affected, you didn't seem to be that time. When I arrived from Valdemar on Thursday, well, it was not pleasant."

Gavin frowned, concerned. "Were you okay?"

"It's just nausea, headache, bad ones, but not actually serious." He smiled a little and leaned back against the glass. "I was fortunate enough to have Molly stop by, and she stayed to help. I was fine after that."

"Molly took care of you?" Gavin grinned.

Karal shot him a quelling glance. "She did, yes. And stayed until I was asleep, which was very kind of her."

"Sweet of her," he said and grinned again. "Very sweet. I haven't had a girl take care of me before."

Karal had, but the circumstances weren't ones he wanted to think about, so he just made a face at Gavin. "It was sweet, and I fear I repayed her poorly by simply falling asleep."

"Were you supposed to be doing something else?" Gavin asked.

"Well, no, and the medicines always make me drowsy." He traced a pattern on the glass, the outline of a sun, and smiled again. "It was a difficult trip. Molly's company was an unexpected boon."

"Why didn't you say anything when we were talking about girls the other night?" Gavin asked.

"I...don't know," he said frowning. "I wasn't keeping things from you, it simply didn't occur to me. It wasn't, it is not like you and Inara. Molly is my friend." Though there was a certain pinkness of ear at that last sentence.

"I didn't mean to imply anything," Gavin said, blushing a little. "And Inara's just...my friend too." Which was a lie, but, oh well. "It's good that you have a friend though. She's nice."

"I know you weren't, Gavin," he said, touching his friend on the shoulder, and not believing what he said about Inara for one single moment. "It is, and she is. Very nice."

"Good for you then," Gavin said and grinned. "I'm glad she was there for you."

"So am I." He was quiet for a minute, then grinned. "She took me for a ride on her swoopbike, even let me drive it."

"Swoop bike!" Gavin whooped a little. "Those are fun!"

"It was," he agreed. "A little bit scary, but very fun, and I didn't even run into a tree or anything!"

"Is she going to take you riding again?"

"I think so, yes." Nope, there was absolutely no pinkening of the ears there at all. "And I am taking her for another ride on Trenor."

Gavin noticed the blush but didn't say anything. "Sounds fun."

Okay, he couldn't resist. "Nice blush."

Karal glanced sideways, blushed more, then pointedly stared out the window. "The view is much nicer."
