Room 406, evening

After staying up way too late after her date Saturday night, Isabel spent Sunday working on essays and applications with a short break to answer an email.

Monday morning Charlie had convinced her take a few hours and go for a drive, which she had enjoyed. It was nice to see the leaves change colors and to browse through the giant rummage sale. Strangely, the game had been silent since the bought it.

But once they returned to Fandom, Isabel went back to work on her applications. The November first early admission deadline was approaching and she still wasn't sure what to do.

The door was open.

Meg had been working out with Cassandra on the roof and was on the way back down to her floor when she spotted Isabel in her room.

"Hey!" she said.

"Hi Meg," Isabel smiled. "What's up?"

"Nothing much. I was just on my back from the roof." Meg said, leaning against the door frame. "My roommate is teaching me how to fight."

"Really? That's cool," she said, motioning Meg into the room. "Come and sit. There's water in the mini-fridge if you want it. I know sparring is thirsty work. I remember when Aeryn taught me."

Meg smiled and came into the room to help herself to a bottle of water. "I figured I'd need the training. I would hate to be the damsel in distress every time something invades."

Isabel nodded. "Very smart. Enough weirdness happens here that it's good to be prepared. What was she? He? Teaching you?"

"She, Cassandra." Meg said. "She was mostly teaching me how to punch properly. I was doing it all wrong."

"Were you tucking your thumb in? Because that's bad," she told her. "It sort of defeats the purpose if you hit someone and break your thumb doing it."

"Oh, no. I knew that rule." she said. "I wasn't putting my body into it. So my punches were real weak."

"Oh yeah, that's a good one. Because if you're not going to hurt them, what's the point in hitting someone," Isabel replied. "You should get some gloves and practice on the bag in the gym."

"I haven't been to the gym yet." she said. "I might have to do that tomorrow. I've been slacking in the working out department since I've been here."

"I try to handwavily hit the elliptical trainer on a regular basis," she nodded. "And now that it's cooler, I'll run some more. Otherwise I'll be this slug like creature sitting on the bed from all the doughnuts I eat around here."

"Baked goods are everywhere here." Meg said. "If it isn't that it's someone cooking in the kitchen."

"Guilty," Isabel laughed. "I like to cook. In fact I'll probably be cooking at some point this week. I promised Wyatt I'd make him lasagna. Since it's impossible to just make enough for two, I'll probably feed whoever wanders through."

"I've been guilty of it too." she admitted. "Though my expertise lies in breakfast and cookies."

"Christmas cookies?" No Isabel was not looking for a partner in crime for the holidays. Why do you ask?

"Sure, when the season is right." she said.

"And when does your season start?" To Isabel the correct answer is the first week of November for baking, because you can freeze and then ship to avoid the holiday rush.

"Whenever I think people won't look at me weird when I offer them a cookie in the shape of Santa Claus." Meg said, smiling. "Usually mid-November."

"I usually start in the beginning of the month," she admitted. "But I think I'll be late this year. College stuff has be a bit crazy at the moment."

"I know how that is." she said. "I'm in the middle of battling with my parents about that now."

"Oh? They don't like where you want to go?" Isabel was grateful her parents hadn't given her too hard a time about applying to school in New York even though they would have preferred her to be a bit closer to home.

"They want me to go to Hearst, which is the college in Neptune." Meg said. "Everyone in my graduating class in Neptune will probably go there and I kinda want to stay away from that. High school there was bad enough."

"And of course if you go there I bet they'd want you to live at home," she said. "Which, yeah, not so much fun after here."

"Yeah, now that I'm away from home there's no way I want to go back." Meg said. She knew she should though, for her sister's sake. "My parents are really strict and ultra-religious."

"Oh ouch." Isabel would say more, because it was Meg's family. "Well you'll be eighteen when you graduate right? They can't make you."

"I actually turn 18 on Thursday." Meg said. "So I'll be able to pull the 'can't make me' card very soon."

"Oh awesome," she smiled. "Happy Birthday!"

"Thanks!" she said. "I can finally vote. Yay?"

"I've had Professor Lyman's classes. It's a definite yay!" Isabel laughed.

"Yeah, I don't smoke and porn really isn't for me so voting is the perk I'm most excited about." she said, smirking. "Oh! And I can get into clubs."

"I get that. I wasn't big into clubs back home, and here it's never been an issue. I mean, you've been to Caritas right?" she asked.

"Once, when Dick made me go. I don't really drink." she said. She knew she must have come off as kind of lame. "But I like dancing. I heard D.C. had some good clubs."

"I don't drink either," Isabel shrugged. "Alien metabolism means that one sip of booze and I wind up plastered. I don't like being that out of control."

"I've heard that. Although I've never really checked it out. I guess I'm just a homebody at heart." But maybe now...Isabel was pretty sure Wyatt would like to go dancing one night.

"I'm sort of a homebody too." she said. "But it's nice to go out every once in a while."

"True enough. I think we might have to do just that one night. I wonder if Dean would like to go dancing?" she grinned, thinking of what radio said.

Meg looked down and blushed slightly. "I'm not sure if he's the dancing type."

"Possibly not. But you won't know till you ask," Isabel pointed out. "It could be fun to get dressed up and go out for a change."

Meg nodded. "I so need an excuse to show off my dressy clothes. You don't get a lot of chances to do that here."

Isabel had been thinking of her little red dress. She supposed dressy was one way to describe it. "No, this place is pretty laid back. Which is a good thing given how often we deal with weirdness. It's sort of difficult to fight something in heels. Well, unless you use them as a weapon."

"Yeah, running in heels is definitely a challenge." she said. Not that she's ever had to. "That would be another good excuse for going out. You don't really see D.C. being invaded all the time. It might actually be less insane."

"DC has politicians. It's an asylum. Just slightly less insane then this place," she laughed. "But yeah, I'm pretty sure we won't have to deal with any weirdness there."

"At least we can wear heels there and not worry about having to use them for stabbing creatures." she said.

"Which, damn I think I've been here too long. That sounds sort of boring," Isabel grinned.

Meg laughed. "I know! Using shoes for their actual purpose? Insane!"

"Well technically shoes are nice weapons. There was this football player once?" she said, rolling her eyes. "I swear it was like dancing with an octopus. One heel, deliberately placed, right in his instep? Put a stop to that."
