Room 406, after archery into the evening

After last night's festivities, Isabel could use a little quiet. So tonight she's sitting in her room catching up on email, running through her lists of things to do for Fourth of July and possibly reading some Wendy the Werewolf Hunter fanfic. Not that she'd ever admit that.

The door is open.

"I do actually, but only because we've talked about," Isabel said quietly. "I'm glad he's trying to find out though. I'd ask Xander to ask his Willow for him, but I'm pretty sure there's some time differences between when Willow is and when Cedric's from."

"We sent a letter yesterday, and now we're just waiting to hear back. I hope it doesn't take very long." He opened his eyes. "That might be useful. If it's a time later than Cedric's, she might be able to find out what - if anything - happened."

"I heard about the letter. Cedric actually stopped by here earlier, we talked for a bit and he told me," Isabel explained. "Let's see what answer he gets from the letter before we go messing about with the time line."

"Yeah, I know." Jack reached for her hand, folding it between both of his. "I'm glad he's talking to someone else about it. Hopefully it'll stop him from doing anything stupid, like going back to try and find out what's happening. Last thing I want him to do is go running off alone into a dangerous situation."

"No, he can't do that," she smiled. "That's Michael's job."

"I'll be sure to tell him that." Jack grinned. "I'd hate to have my wizard get in trouble for doing someone else's job, because you know Michael would show up, demanding some sort of payment for copyright violation, and the whole thing would end in tears." Laughing at himself, he kissed her hand. "Much better off if we just avoid the whole mess and keep him here."

"Honestly? If he ever showed up here? His head would explode." Isabel shook her head, "I still haven't told them that everyone here knows the truth."

"That's putting it mildly. They'd be ballistic." Isabel sighed, "I get why. People knowing the truth? Not only does it put us in danger, it puts them in danger as well."

"I can understand that. Secrets aren't much use if everyone knows them." Jack rested their joined hands on his chest and looed up at her. "Is there something you're actually in danger from, or are they just worried about how people might react?"

"A little of both," she replied, using her free hand to push her laptop and papers out of the way so that she could stretch out next to him. "People tend not to like anything that's different or unknown, what's more unknown then aliens. And there are dangers. Lots of them. We've already had a run-in with the Special Unit of the FBI and there are other aliens that would love to see us dead."

"Sounds like you're safer here than you would be back home." He turned onto his side so he could face her. "But I guess that means you're worrying about them, about whether they're safe." Smiling a little, he squeezed her hand. "The more I hear, from you, from Cedric, the more I think I'm the lucky one."

"In some ways, I think I am. It's weird, but sometimes, despite the zombies, and the mummies, I think the island protects us." Isabel put her head down and closed her eyes. "I do worry about them. Last year, Max got taken by the FBI. We almost didn't get him back. And then this Spring? Just about the time you disappeared, I had to go back to Roswell for a friend's funeral. At first we thought he died in a car accident but then we found out he'd been killed by another alien."

Jack didn't answer right away, but he shifted forward until his body touched hers, and draped an arm across her waist. "Real dangers, then. Not imagined ones," he said quietly. "The alien that killed your friend. Was it one of the ones from your planet?"

Isabel closed her eyes and tipped her head forward to rest against Jack's shoulder. "In our past life, she'd been my brother's wife. In this life? We thought she was a friend."

He hugged her close and pushed away his anger. "I'm sorry, Isabel. I guess it's too much to hope for that she's dead?" Okay, maybe not all of his anger.

"Sometimes I hope she is. But other times..." She sighed against his chest. "The last time we saw her, she was blasting off back to Antar, pregnant with my brother's son. Or at least we think she was pregnant. It could have just been one giant mind-frell. We just don't know. The scary thing is, we almost went with her. If we had? We'd be dead now."

"But you didn't, and that's what matters. You're here, and you're safe." He smiled and pulled away enough to playfully kiss the tip of her nose. "I was right. I am the lucky one. Everyone that's important to me is here."

For now, Isabel thought. But she pushed the thought away and forced a smile. Playfully she reached out and rubbed his chest. "Do you think I could get some of that luck to rub off on me?"

"Hmm." Jack frowned at her, then stretched like a cat, before settling back onto the bed, arms folded under his head. "People who get to rub me usually think they've gotten lucky, so rub away. Let's see if it transfers." And he grinned wickedly at her.

Jack squirmed away, laughing, and grabbed her hand. "Hey! You're the one who wanted to rub me."

"Innocently!" Isabel laughed. "Then you went and made it all...inuenndoey!" She pulled her hand away and quickly reached in to wrap both arms around him in a hug. "Thank you," she said quietly. "You can always make me laugh."

Still laughing softly, Jack settled his arms around her. "And I love to hear it, so I'll keep on doing it." He grinned and kissed her cheek. "Even if I have to get innuendoey."
