Room 406, All day

Isabel made a quick pass through the common room kitchen to fix up a plate of healthy snack food then returned to her room to spend the day trying to keep up with the reading for all her classes. As she settled in with the reading for Interstellar Relations, her mind wandered to something she'd noticed in yesterday's Ethics class. Reaching for her phone, Isabel left a quick message, before opening her book and beginning to read.

"All right, so I went to the Underworld," Bel said. "I needed to work some things out and that was the only place I could do it."

"Are you out of your freaking mind?" she asked, her voice rising with each word until she was yelling. "Gee, I need to work things out, so let me go where they want to kill me? My god, testosterone really does kill brain cells."

"I was pissed off," Bel said sullenly. "You don't want me around here when I'm pissed off."

"So you go out into the perserve and burn down a tree, or yell and scream and curse. You don't go risking yourself in the Underworld," Isabel said, making an effort to speak calmly. "Did you even stop to think what would have happened if you'd been hurt or worse down there? No one would have known. Can you imagine how upset Phoebe would have been if you just disappeared? What if she tried to go look for you?"

"I know how to take care of myself," Bel snapped defensively. "I didn't survive this long without knowing how to."

"For Pete's sake, I'm not saying you can't. But you are not invulnerable. And there's such a thing as being overcome by sheer numbers. Which is totally the chance you took," Isabel said, exasperated.

Bel shrugged a little. "Yeah, maybe," he let himself admit.

"Ya think?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. Scooting back against the headboard, she motioned towards the foot of the bed. "Take a sit, relax. Tell me what got you in such a state that you'd take such a stupid risk."

Bel sat down wearily on the bed. "I got into a fight with Phoebe," he said reluctantly.

"Must have been one hell of a fight if it set you off like that," Isabel observed quietly.

"She threatened to start fooling around and kissing people," Bel growled.

Isabel blinked. Repeatedly. "Just randomly? For the hell of it?"

Bel may have squirmed a little. "Because I kissed Anders," he said. "But I told her I was sorry. And it didn't mean anything! I was just trying to make him flail!"

She had to bite back the first several responses that came to mind. Mostly because they all involved the phrase dumbass. "But you're dating Phoebe. And as far as I know it's fairly exclusive? That hasn't changed right?"

"No, of course it hasn't changed," Bel said. "She's my girl. Which is why I don't want her kissing anyone else."

"Bel? Have you ever heard the phrase 'double standard'," she asked slowly.

"Yes, of course I have," Bel said. Nope, still not applying it to himself.

"And you don't think telling Phoebe she can't kiss anyone else, while you're kissing Anders isn't a bit hypocritical?" Isabel shifted and sat on her hands. It was the only way to keep from thwapping Bel soundly about his head.

"It's not like I slept with him or something!" Bel protested. He was in prime thwapping distance should the need arise.

The need arose. Isabel smacked him on the back of the head. "But you're dating Phoebe. And unless you've got some sort of open relationship that I didn't hear about, you sure as hell shouldn't be kissing anyone else. For god's sake Bel, that would be like me making out with you right now and then telling Greg, 'Well I didn't sleep with him so I don't see why you're upset."

Bel sullenly rubbed the back of his head. "She knows she's the one I love," he muttered. "I just wanted to make Anders flail, that's it."

"Well you're going to have to decide what's more important," she said, patting his shoulder sympathetically. "Keeping things good with Phoebe or making people flail with unexpected boykissy."

"I want things to be good with Phoebe!" he said emphatically. "But I don't wanna be told what to do."

"It's not a matter of being told what to do. It's a matter of respecting what you have." Isabel bit her lip and reminded herself that Bel had grown up very differently. "What you have with Phoebe is special. In all regards, from the sex to the kissing. And she wants to share it only with you. Being casual about it with other people, diminishes what you have with her. Does that make sense at all?"

"Yeah, I guess so," Bel said unhappily. He sighed. "I'm a real jerk, aren't I?"
